If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on BBBY.

After hitting a one-year high of $37.61 last June, the stock hit a one-year low of $24.49 in January. BBBY opened this morning at $29.98. So far today the stock has hit a low of $29.72 and a high of $30.54. As of 12:05, BBBY is trading at $30.28, up $1.70 (6.0%). The chart for BBBY looks bearish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider an August bull-put credit spread below the $25 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 4.2% return in just seven weeks as long as BBBY is above $25 at August expiration. Bed, Bath & Beyond would have to fall by more than 17% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

BBBY hasn't been below $25 for more than a few days in the past year and has shown support around $26.50 recently. This trade could be risky if the economic situation gets worse, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the support the stock might find around $26, where it bottomed in January.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. Shares rose substantially in the after-hours trading session yesterday, jumping over 8%, and as I reviewed various earnings reports last night, I found myself drawn to the retailer's stock performance. I haven't been a huge fan of Bed Bath & Beyond as of late, so I figured I should take a look at the earnings release to see if there's anything here that would change my opinion.

Unfortunately, there isn't. Sales may have grown 6%, and expectations may have been beaten by $0.03, but net income still dropped over 20% to $0.30 per diluted share. Cash flow from operations declined 44% to $65.8 million. And same-store sales were very anemic, rising only 0.8%.

I choose, in this case, to focus on those figures. I also consider the fact that Bed Bath & Beyond does not pay a dividend, and that we are in an awful economic environment, both from a consumer and stock-market standpoint. This is not the stock I'd want to face the recession with, and I don't necessarily find it to be a big value right now. When it comes to retail, I am more likely to look at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and Target (NYSE: TGT). I'd even consider a Home Depot (NYSE: HD) or a Lowe's (NYSE: LOW). All of these stocks pay dividends and have better brand equities and more attractive prospects. Bed Bath & Beyond certainly didn't deliver an earnings bomb, but I'm still not inclined to put money here.

Among the top paid CEOS including base pay, perks and other compensation are Merrill Lynch's new CEO John Thain, Oracle's Larry Ellison, Goldman Sachs' Lloyd Blankfein and American Express' Kenneth Chenault who each made over $50 million last year.
List: Highest Paid CEOs Stocks may fall, but execs' pay doesn't - USATODAY.com CEO perks often include use of company jet, security - USATODAY.com

Retirees Turn to Communes
With living costs spiraling upward and empty-nesters feeling a need for a greater sense of community in their lives, some baby boomers are reconsidering the concept of group living. (NYSE: AA), a dividend cut from Washington Mutual (NYSE: WM) and the Federal Reserve minutes, all of which affecting investors' sentiment. The Dow industrials closed 35 points lower, or 0.29%, the S&P 500 lost 7 points, or 0.51%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 16 points, or 0.68%.

This morning, given the very light economic calendar consisting of February wholesale inventories at 10:00 a.m. EDT, the Street will likely focus -- once again -- on the troubles in financials. The top story on the Wall Street Journal is about the options the Fed is considering to alleviate the credit crunch further including "contingency plans for expanding its lending power in the event its recent steps to unfreeze credit markets fail." While such plans aren't surprising and even welcome, the report comes after the Fed showed concern the economic downturn could last into 2009 when it released Tuesday the minutes of its FOMC meeting.

And as if that wasn't enough to squash some hopes some investors lately had that we have seen the bottom, Citigroup (NYSE: C) came and reported it is close to a deal to sell $12 billion of loans at a loss to Apollo Management LP, Blackstone Group LP (NYSE: BX) and TPG Inc. as part of an effort to shrink the bank's balance sheet. Again, not surprising after what Citi's CEO said only Tuesday, and even a positive development, but it goes to show the magnitude of the problem and potential losses. Indeed, shares of Citi rebounded nearly 2.7% in premarket trading.

Still in financials, Standard & Poor's late Tuesday slashed its ratings on four mortgage insurers.

And not just financials are dampening the mood this morning, United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) cut its first-quarter profit guidance after the closeTuesday, as it was squeezed from both sides. On the one hand the weakening economy has reduced domestic package volume, while on the other higher fuel prices increased costs. Shares of UPS fell nearly 2.9% in premarket trading.

Earnings are due out of Circuit City Stores (NYSE: CC) and, after the close, Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY).

Oil prices were steady Wednesday ahead of the release of weekly U.S. inventories at 10:30 a.m. EDT that is expected to show gasoline inventories fell last week.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Option update: Bed Bath & Beyond puts active into EPS and outlook

Filed under: Bed Bath and Beyond (BBBY), Options

Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY) is scheduled to report Q4 EPS on April 9.

When the Richmond, Virginia-based company reported fourth-quarter results back in November, its loss of 64 cents per share was deeper than the 31 cents per share loss forecast by analysts polled by Thomson Financial, as well as the nine cents per share loss in the same period of 2006. For the current quarter, analysts expect the loss to narrow to six cents per share, compared to a profit of 61 cents in the year-ago quarter.

The company's earnings per share growth forecast for this year is a dismal -92.7%, worse than the industry average, as well as the 2.45% of rival Best Buy Inc. (NYSE: BBY). So it's little surprise that the analysts' consensus recommendation is to hold Circuit City, and has been for at least three months. Shares are trading much closer to the 52-week low of $3.44 from mid March than the 52-week high of $19.12 from almost a year ago. The share price closed Monday at $4.76, and fell to about $4.62 in early trading Tuesday.

When it reported fourth-quarter results back in November, its 52 cents per share earnings beat the consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial by a penny, and was up two cents from the same period of the previous year. For the current quarter, analysts expect 64 cents per share, down from 79 cents in the year-ago quarter.

The company's earnings per share growth forecast for this year is -7.19%, worse than the industry average and the S&P 500. The consensus analysts' recommendation has recently shifted from buy back to hold Bed Bath & Beyond. Shares closed Monday at $31.11, up from the 52-week low of $24.49 in early January, and surged to $31.70 in early trading Tuesday.

Even at the time that I've been writing this post, the Dow narrowed its decline from about 200 points to almost 100 points. When investors have been fearing since yesterday a 500 point free-fall, they collectively sigh at a 200 point drop.

Naturally, the Federal Reserve's rate cut of 75 basis points helped cushion the blow. Futures have indeed started rebounding immediately after the announcement. But what's interesting is the reaction this move caused. Financials, home builders and retailers are rebounding, with some financials and retailers being among today's best performers. Some financials like JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) and Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER) are up over 3% and 3.6% respectively.

So you might say, financials I can understand. They've written down losses, their shares have declined markedly and with today's Fed cut, that could mean they've bottomed. But retailers? Hasn't everybody been talking about the consumers not having money and cutting spending? Especially come time of reset on their mortgages?

Well, guess what! The Fed has cut rates. The reset rates may be lower than expected (as long rates have already started to fall and may continue to do so following this cut) and consumers may be able to keep their spending intact, or at least will not be as strapped as originally expected. Or so the thinking goes. Add to that bottom feeders buying up hard-hit retailers, and voila -- retailers are up. Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY) and Kohl's Corp (NYSE: KSS) are up over 7%, Home Depot (NYSE: HD), Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) and American Eagle (NYSE: AEO) are up over 5%. Sears (NASDAQ: SHLD) is up 9.7%.

[Update: Part of the reason for the retailers strong performance might be due to traders getting out of shorts as CNBC has reported earlier.]

Of course, many bear pundits are out today in full force, predicting still a significant recession and bear market. Many recommend to stay on the sidelines until the bottom can be seen more clearly. With such a huge inventory in the housing market, that coming bottom could take a while. And with the Fed looking nervous and reactionary rather than in control of the situation and proactive, the bears might still be right.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Before the bell: WM, SLB, NYX, UA, PHG, WWY, RIMM ...

Filed under: Before the bell, Earnings reports, Analyst upgrades and downgrades, Deals, Ford Motor (F), Schlumberger Limited (SLB), Bed Bath and Beyond (BBBY), Tiffany and Co (TIF), NYSE Euronext (NYX), Research in Motion (RIMM), Wrigley, (Wm) Jr (WWY), Staples Inc (SPLS), Washington Mutual (WM), Under Armour'A' (UA)
Washington Mutual Inc.
Or how about Morton's (NYSE: MRT) (Cramer's Take), Ruth's (NASDAQ: RUTH) (Cramer's Take), Ruby Tuesday (NYSE: RT) (Cramer's Take)? Can't they be worth something?

Ever since the collapse of private equity these stocks have declined pretty relentlessly. They have worn people down like you wouldn't believe.

But what happens in a turn? Shouldn't we think about putting on a basket of these? Maybe that Mortons/Ruth's/Ruby group?

Their balance sheets are almost all really strong. The consumer can come back. The earnings stream is there.

Costco (NASDAQ: COST) (Cramer's Take) isn't the only retailer in this country doing well, give or take Guess (NYSE: GES) (Cramer's Take) and J. Crew (NYSE: JCG) (Cramer's Take), Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ: URBN) (Cramer's Take) and TJX (NYSE: TJX) (Cramer's Take).

But the group has been gaffed and gutted. Somehow I think that some of these can come back. I know it's not gonna happen now. Too many questions. But when? When things turn you won't be able to buy these anywhere near where they are.

Yet, in a world where gasoline seems like it is marching to $4/gallon, where McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) (Cramer's Take), which I own for <hlink href="http://secure2.thestreet.com/cap/prm.do?OID=005103&cm_cat=AA&cm_ite=005103&cm_ven=EMAIL">Action Alerts PLUS</hlink>, can be crushed in a heartbeat and when gold's going to $1,000, the conventional wisdom of just forgetting this group seems to be playing out perfectly.

Yet, one has to wonder how a solid chain with good financials and good balance sheet simply can't be a buy soon, especially when it is just six months from lapping some really bad numbers.

What really weighs against it besides the consumer? Too many stores and restaurants. Until we see some closings, some trimmings, some shuttings and some bankruptcies, as we saw in 1990, I guess the operative wisdom is "Forget about it."

Big Blue said fourth-quarter earnings from continuing operations rose 24% from a year ago to $2.80 per share on revenue of $28.9 billion, beating Wall Street expectations of $2.60 per share on sales of $27.82 billion by a wide margin.
